Bark Textured Water Offering Bowl

Traditionally used in tea ceremony to receive excess water, rinses and spent tea, the Jian Shui is sometimes referred to as a water catcher or waste-water bowl. I’ve come to think of it instead as a Water Offering Bowl — a vessel that receives what is poured away and gives it a place within the ritual.

This generous form holds approximately 1000ml, making it well suited to longer tea sessions or sharing tea with others.

Inspired by the weathered surface of tree bark, the exterior is worked with sodium silicate and gently stretched, allowing the clay to crack and open into its own organic pattern. During firing, warm iron flashing has moved across the surface in soft blushes of rust, ochre and earthy red, making each area of the bowl subtly different.

The interior is finished in a quiet, soft-toned glaze, creating a gentle contrast with the tactile exterior and making the vessel easy to rinse and care for after use.

Each piece is unique and lovingly handmade — intended not simply as a functional object, but as another small point of attention within the rhythm of tea.
