Dark Red is a favourite of ours, especially Nicoleta’s and for good reason.
This is a sun-dried dianhong from Yunnan, made with large-leaf material grown deep in the forests of Xishuangbanna. It’s a classic hongcha, but with the kind of depth and softness that Yunnan teas do so well.
Crafted with a high proportion of golden buds, Dark Red carries a naturally rich fragrance and a thick, satisfying mouthfeel. In the cup, you’ll find a warm, fruity aroma and a sweet, malty character that brings to mind ripe stone fruit. The body is smooth and full, without the sharp tannic edge many people associate with “breakfast-style” black teas.
True to its Yunnan roots, this tea loves to be re-steeped. Brew it lightly and it’s gentle, soft, and quietly sweet. Push it a little further and it opens into deeper stone fruit notes with a lush, rounded body — still no harshness, no drying finish, just comfort and warmth lingering on the palate.
This is one of our all-time favourite Yunnan hongchas. Enjoy it as an afternoon gongfu session in the forest, cold-brew it overnight for an easy, refreshing iced tea, or add milk for a rich, caramel-malty morning milky tea.
And if you have the patience to let it rest, Dark Red will reward you over time — slowly developing deeper aromatics and leaning into more chocolate-like notes as it ages.
A tea that meets you wherever you are, and grows with you if you let it.
